From the FACES OF DYNóW series:

Dora
oil on canvas, 48 x 42 inches

When the Nazis invaded Dynów, Dora Neger was a young girl with blond braids and her mother told her to go and hide down by the San River and to pass as a non-Jewish Polish girl. She was in the Neu-Ulm displaced persons camp in Deggendorf where she met up with her cousin Hersch-Meilech Neger, his wife and four children. Another cousin, my grandmother Bella Neger, sponsored Dora to come to New York in 1947. Dora stayed with my grandparents in the Bronx, and was welcomed at the Dynower Society, a group of people from Dynów who met for regular meetings and events in New York. This group also raised money to send back to Dynów before WWII to help their brethren.

Dora met her husband Shimon Marcus, a wealthy dairy owner at a Dynower Society lunch. Dora was tragically murdered at her home in Long Island on October 16, 1964. She tried to fight off her attacker who stabbed her 97 times.

During my genealogical searching I found and got in touch with Dora's son Michael. Dora was the only surviving member of Menashe Neger';s family. Her parents and seven siblings were killed in the Nazi murder in Dynów Rosh Hashanah 1939.
